The University of Oregon, a distinguished public research university in Eugene, Oregon, seeks applications and nominations for the Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication. The School enrolls 1,800 undergraduate students who study journalism, advertising, communication studies, and public relations, as well as approximately 125 graduate students in specialized master?s and doctoral programs. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to engage and inspire the students and faculty and accelerate the School?s progress toward becoming one of the nation?s centers of excellence for leadership in journalism, media, and communications for the 21st century.

Based on a scenic 295-acre campus in Eugene, in the beautiful Willamette Valley ? just over an hour from the Pacific Ocean, the Cascade Mountains and the city of Portland ? the University of Oregon (UO) is the flagship institution of the Oregon University System, a network of seven public universities across the state. UO is one of 63 institutions in the nation admitted to membership in the Association of American Universities (AAU). UO currently enrolls approximately 24,447 students, including 20,631 undergraduate and 3,816 graduate students, and offers 300 comprehensive academic programs. This is a pivotal moment for the new dean and the campus as the University?s new President, Dr. Michael Gottfredson, and Provost, Dr. James Bean, begin to develop and implement strategies that will ensure the continued growth, success, and prosperity of the campus? schools, colleges, research centers and institutes.

Founded in 1916, the School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) is the only school of journalism and communication in Oregon and one of only a few in the Pacific Northwest. As it approaches its centennial celebration, the SOJC is well positioned to meet the challenges of a transformative era in media, journalism, public relations and communications. It has graduated 10 Pulitzer Prize winners and numerous other distinguished alumni. Regarded as a pioneer in digital media, its students were among the first to develop an iPad magazine which has been featured nationally and internationally. The School has developed a new core ?Gateway? curriculum focused on multi-media storytelling and has achieved steady growth in enrollment. The SOJC also launched the George S. Turnbull Center at the university?s Portland location, and by January 2013, the SJOC will have moved back into its home in Allen Hall, which is nearing completion of a $15 million, 16,000 square-foot expansion and upgrade to a state of the art facility.

The Dean will play a critical role in driving the success of the School, and will work with faculty, staff and students to evolve, and in some cases revolutionize, academic programs that will prepare the next generation of professionals and leaders who will thrive in the dynamic fields of journalism and communications. To that end, the Dean will be asked to address the following opportunities and challenges, which are detailed more fully in this document:

India's Services Growth Index Falls Slightly: HSBC

Bangalore: India's services sector growth rate saw a slight fall in July but remained in the positive terrain for the ninth month in a row, amid rise in new orders and employment levels holding up, an HSBC survey says.

The HSBC's services purchasing managers index (PMI) for July stood at 54.2, tad lower from 54.3 in June.

Despite a 10 basis points dip, the index has kept above the 50 mark, indicating growth, since November 2011.

"Service sector activity grew at a steady pace in July, with growth in new orders and employment holding up," HSBC Chief Economist for India and ASEAN Leif Eskesen said.

Going forward, a moderation in output is likely as the pace of growth in new orders as also the business sentiment has slumped for the next 12 months.

According to HSBC, though new orders at private sector companies in India rose steeply in July, the pace of increase was lower than that recorded in June.

Besides, even as service providers remained optimistic that activity will rise further over the coming year, the level of sentiment dipped to the lowest since March.

Meanwhile, India's manufacturing sector witnessed a slowdown in July - the weakest growth rate since November - because of moderation in domestic and export orders amid sagging global economy.

Accordingly, the HSBC India Composite Output Index, which maps both services and manufacturing activity, fell to 54.4 in July, down from 55.7 in June - signalling slowest expansion of output in three months.

HSBC noted that the volume of incoming new work expanded in both sectors surveyed -- services as well as manufacturing - with services firms signalling a faster increase.

There was also a slight rise in workforces at Indian private sector firms including both manufacturers and service providers during July.

Inflation eased to some extent in July, but remained firm on the back of rising wage costs and solid demand.

Service providers reportedly passed higher cost burdens on to their clients as labour and raw material prices increased, while, manufacturers handled rise in fuel, labour and raw material costs.

"With inflation risks still lingering despite the slowdown and policy action out of Delhi so far insufficient, the RBI has little room to manoeuvre," Eskesen said.

In its quarterly monetary policy review on July 31, the Reserve Bank left key interest rates unchanged on fears of deficient monsoon and high inflation.

The RBI has also lowered the economic growth projection for the current fiscal to 6.5 percent from its earlier estimate of 7.3 percent, and has raised inflation forecast for the fiscal ending March, 2013 to 7 percent, from the earlier projection of 6.5 percent.

Twenty Kingston graduating students are showcasing their work at Kingston Design 2012 ? a collaboration between the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and the University?s Design School to celebrate the year of the Olympics and the Queen?s Diamond Jubilee and to showcase the best of new design in the UK.

Supported by Enterprise Support, dozens of examples of the students? illustration and animation, graphic design, fashion and product design were this week?put on display in three rooms in the BIS building on London?s Victoria Street. The exhibition, which opened on Monday,?will stay at BIS until the end of the year, when it will be moved to Knights Park.

Executive director of Enterprise, Deborah Lock, said: ?This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for Kingston University; not only does it showcase the creativity and innovative nature of students, but?also?that of the academics?whose drive and?commitment enables our students to reach their?full potential.?UK Plc?is extremely fortunate to have such talented academics and students.?

The display, showcasing collaborations and future thinking in fields like design, science music, sustainability and manufacturing, will be enjoyed by visitors to BIS?s waiting rooms, including foreign ministers, CEOs and ambassadors.

BIS has worked with Kingston to develop the pilot project, which it hopes to roll out to other UK universities in 2013.

To save a post. Simply hold your finger down on the post you want to save and a popup that says "Save" will appear. Just tap the popup and you're done!

To access your Saved folder, you must first scroll to the bottom of the sidebar menu and tap on Edit Favorites. Next, tap the + sign and select Saved from your list of Apps. Then tap Done. Now, you should see your Saved folder in the Favorites section of your sidebar menu!

All saved stories are private, so you don't have to worry about Sally being notified that you saved her relationship change to Single. You wouldn't want her to think you're some weird creepy stalker!

You do not need to download an update to receive this feature. You should simply see a notification informing you of the feature at the top of your news feed when you use the Facebook app on your iPhone (see above screenshot). I did not see the notification on my iPad, but the feature is indeed there.

Anyone planning to use this feature? Personally, I could care less about saving stories on Facebook; however, I do see its appeal. Parents can use it it to easily keep track of specific activities that their kids do on Facebook, and others can use use it to save their favorite photos and status updates of friends and family.
