(AP) ? President Barack Obama is basking in the aftermath of his breakthrough directive on illegal immigration and pressing his jobs agenda before a meeting of Hispanic leaders, one day after they gave a cool reception to GOP presidential challenger Mitt Romney and his newly softened stance on immigration.

The president was to speak to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials on Friday near Orlando, his first speech to a Hispanic group since he decreed that many young illegal immigrants brought to the United States as children would be exempted from deportation and granted work permits valid for two years.

The immigration initiative, announced less than five months before the November elections, delighted many in the Latino community and drew renewed attention to the key Hispanic voting bloc and its potential for affecting the presidential election with its turnout and energy. Obama won 67 percent of the Hispanic vote in 2008, and aides believe he could do even better this time.

Romney, who spoke to the group Thursday, backed off the tough anti-illegal immigrant rhetoric of the Republican primaries and vowed to address illegal immigration "in a civil but resolute manner." He outlined plans to overhaul the green card system for immigrants with families and end immigration caps for their spouses and minor children.

But while he attacked Obama's new plan to ease deportation rules as little more than a "stopgap measure," he was vague about how he would treat immigrant children brought to the country illegally by their parents and refused to say whether he would reverse Obama's policy.

Obama and his advisers clearly see an advantage on the issue, and Obama was expected to draw attention to his initiative Friday and call for an overhaul of the entire immigration system. He also was expected to renew his call for Congress to pass his job creation measures, which he has proposed to pay for with tax increases on the wealthy, an idea Republicans reject outright.

Though hardly monolithic in their approach to politics, a majority of Hispanics have been voting Democratic in recent elections. But Obama risked losing some support in part because Hispanics have been hard hit by the economy. What's more, Latino leaders had also grown frustrated with Obama because he failed to deliver on his 2008 pledge to overhaul immigration and because his administration was deporting illegal immigrants in record numbers.

Then came last week's announcement, which could benefit anywhere from 800,000 to 1.4 million immigrants in the U.S., depending on separate estimates.

Obama was to speak about two hours after Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., who has been promoting a plan that would have dealt with young illegal immigrants in a similar fashion to what Obama accomplished administratively. Rubio's effort was a response to Democratic legislation, called the DREAM Act, that would have created a path to citizenship for some children of illegal immigrants.

Rubio, mentioned as a possible running mate for Romney, criticized Obama's policy, saying it ignored the Constitution and bypassed Congress. Romney has said he was studying Rubio's proposal but has not endorsed it.

During the Republican primaries, Romney said he would veto the DREAM Act ? formally the Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors Act ? and complete a 2,000-mile border fence with Mexico to help stem illegal immigration.

Obama senior campaign adviser David Axelrod this week said Romney is "hopelessly twisted" on the issue of immigration. "He went as far to the right as he could in the primaries in order to become the nominee," Axelrod said. "Now he's desperately looking for a way out."

Romney seized on the temporary status of Obama's plan as his prime criticism. The Republican also vowed to offer illegal immigrants who serve in the military "a path to legal status," which the campaign says ultimately could allow for full citizenship.

But Romney's campaign could not immediately detail how many immigrants might be affected by his policies. Nor could they detail which would require legislative action.

"Despite his promises, President Obama has failed to address immigration reform," Romney said. "For two years, this president had huge majorities in the House and Senate ? he was free to pursue any policy he pleased. But he did nothing to advance a permanent fix for our broken immigration system. Nothing. Instead, he failed to act until facing a tough re-election and trying to secure your vote."

Romney also told the Latino officials that he would do away with Obama's signature health care law. Often a huge applause line with his audiences, his declaration prompted just a few to clap and one person in the audience booed.

Obama's campaign, which doesn't draw much attention to the health care law on the campaign trail, has made it a top issue in Spanish-language ads, targeting an audience that is among the most uninsured in the country.

Laura Jane Grace's Transgender Life: How Has It Affected Her Family?

'My wife has been my rock,' Against Me! frontwoman says, but adds her new life 'has completely ended' her relationship with her father.
By James Montgomery

Photo:

Last month, Laura Jane Grace very publically came out as transgender in a Rolling Stone feature, bringing to close 31 years of living with a carefully guarded secret and effectively beginning a brand-new life.

Of course, things weren't quite as simple as that: Laura's revelation only came after an intense year-long period of self-evaluation and open, often painful honesty. And when she and her Against Me! mates sat down with MTV News for their first on-camera interview since the Rolling Stone story broke, they spoke at length about just how she came out to the band.

But that's only part of the story. Because before Laura shared the news with her friends, she had to come out to her family, including her wife, Heather. And, as is often the case with life-altering events like this, there's been some collateral damage along the way — including the unwanted attention Laura's transgender life has brought on Heather and their daughter, Evelyn.

"I mean, my daughter is my biggest worry of it all. Heather, my wife, has been my rock; she's shown me support and love beyond my wildest expectations. On this tour in particular, it's our first family tour, and she has, from the get-go, made sure people realize it's Laura, to use the correct pronouns, and has been my biggest advocate and supporter. And whenever I'm feeling like I need any kind of strength, I look to her for that," Laura told MTV News. "For my daughter, I'm hoping it doesn't affect her in any negative way, as far as kids can be cruel to each other, once she starts school. It's already weird enough when your dad is in a band, explaining that to other kids, but when your dad is transsexual as well ... I just hope people are kind to my daughter."

In the Rolling Stone piece, Laura also expressed doubts over just how Heather's parents would handle the news — they're described as "somewhat conservative" — though, as she revealed, she's been overjoyed by the support they've shown her.

"I saw them actually, for the first time [since the RS story published] when we played in Chicago," she said. "I woke up on the bus and they were all in the front lounge, and I came out wearing last night's makeup, my hair was all disheveled, and it was like, 'OK, here's everybody! Good morning!' But they all couldn't have been more supportive and couldn't be cooler about the whole thing."

Sadly, the same can't be said for Laura's father, a retired Army major with whom she's never truly been close. At the conclusion of the RS story, Laura said she still hadn't told her father she was transgender — though obviously, since the news came out, he's aware, and he's had a difficult time coming to terms with her new life. Though, tellingly, Laura isn't letting that stop her on her new path. If anything, it's inspired her to continue — if not for her sake, then for her daughter's.

"It has completely ended my relationship with my father. It is what it is," she said. "For me, there were so many things leading up to this decision to come out to this publicly. Having my daughter, like, I had never had that close of a relationship with my father, and when I had my daughter, my father tried to become more a part of my life, because he obviously wanted to have a relationship with his granddaughter. And as I saw that develop, and as we became closer, because of that it was something that started to tear me up inside.

"It was like, 'OK, here we are, I'm building this relationship and setting this example for my daughter, and what are the ramifications of that if this person doesn't even accept their son? And then they're going to develop a relationship with my daughter; what kind of example is that setting to them?' " she continued. "I wanted this in so many ways to be a line in the sand with people, as far as 'This is me. If you have a problem with this, then get out of my life.' And if that's the way it is. It's unfortunate, but what can I do about it?"

'Rock Of Ages': The Reviews Are In!

Tom Cruise rescues rock and roll musical that 'wins no prizes for originality,' critics say.
By Kara Warner

Julianne Hough in "Rock of Ages"
Photo:

It's relatively safe to say "Rock of Ages" has built-in appeal: It's based on a hit Broadway musical of the same name and features a slew of A-list actors singing and dancing along to some of the biggest hits of the 1980s.

Despite all those charms, including the top billing of action star turned rock star Tom Cruise, the whimsical musical is not quite a surefire hit among critics and sits at a less-than-fresh rating over at Rotten Tomatoes. Sing along as we take a walk through the "Rock of Ages" reviews.

The Story
" 'Rock of Ages,' a rags-to-riches rock 'n' roll musical set mostly in a music club on Sunset Strip, wins no prizes for originality. A lot of it is zesty entertainment, with some energetic musical numbers; several big names (Tom Cruise, Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin) prove they can sing well enough to play the Strip if they lose the day job. The two leads are Diego Boneta, as a bartender in the Strip's hottest club, and Julianne Hough, as a naive kid just off the bus from the Midwest. They're both gifted singers and join the others in doing covers of 1980s rock classics. Of course they also fall in love. Of course they have heartfelt conversations while standing behind the 'Hollywood' sign. Of course they break up because of a tragic misunderstanding. Of course their mistake is repaired and (spoiler!) they're back together at the end. Has ever a romance in a musical been otherwise?" — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

The Music and Singing
"It looks like Disneyland and sounds, well, like a bad Broadway musical, with all the power belting and jazz-hand choreography that implies. To put it another way, there's way too much Journey on the soundtrack, and Foreigner. There's also an REO Speedwagon ditty, a few from Twisted Sister, Def Leppard and Poison, and at least two hits that were released after 1987 ('More Than Words' and 'I Remember You'). All the songs are sung, mostly without shame or distinction, by the actors themselves, who slide into the warbling as if into a conversation. A grizzled, bewigged Mr. Baldwin enunciates through his songs, in the Rex Harrison mold, to play a rock survivor, Dennis Dupree, who runs the Bourbon with his sidekick, Lonny (Mr. Brand). They make their stale buddy routine and romance amusing and, as with the rest of the adults, make the movie bearable. A whispering and writhing Mr. Cruise makes it watchable." — Manohla Dargis, New York Times

The Cruise Factor
"The real reason to see 'Rock of Ages,' though, is Tom Cruise. He doesn't sing much, and the one big onstage number he's given — shredding Def Leppard's 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' under a rain of shaken-up beer from the audience — relies heavily on postproduction and backup singing, probably to mask his vocal shortcomings. But especially in his scenes with [Paul] Giamatti and Malin Akerman (as a Rolling Stone critic who's the only one with the guts to call Stacee on his ersatz-Marlon Brando B.S.), Cruise goes to a deep, dark, almost deliberately repellent place I'm not sure he's ever been before (in 'Magnolia,' maybe, and in a comic mode as the profane studio head Les Grossman in 'Tropic Thunder'). The isolation and paranoia brought on by extreme fame is something Tom Cruise clearly understands from the inside out — and what we know, or think we know, about the actor's personal eccentricities can't help but color our understanding of Stacee as well. When Cruise and Akerman have lurid (but still PG-13) sex atop an air-hockey table while singing Foreigner's 'I Want to Know What Love Is,' Cruise's expressions of erotic anguish are like something out of Steve McQueen's sex-addiction drama 'Shame,' with a hint of tragic drag queen thrown in. Cruise's portrait of the rock star as empty-eyed nihilist doesn't really belong in this gaudy pop trinket of a movie — it's both too outsized and too inward — but that's precisely what makes for its fascination. 'Rock of Ages' is only recommended for audiences with a taste for highly processed cheese, but it did leave me hopeful that the next decade may see the rise of Weird Tom Cruise." — Dana Stevens, Slate

The Final Word
" 'Rock of Ages' is an effulgent celebration of fakeness. It isn't trying to be real; it's trying to be faker than any fake thing has ever been before. Compared to this fake musical set in a fake version of the past that spins a ridiculously fake narrative of pop-culture history, 'Mamma Mia' (the last jukebox musical to be vilified by critics and embraced by the public) is pretty much a mumblecore movie. 'Rock of Ages' is so remarkably fake it's almost ur-fake or meta-fake; you can watch the globs of trans fats congealing on its preternaturally bright surfaces as it cools. This movie could hardly seem more weirdly artificial if it had been jointly hatched by David Lynch and John Waters, and raised in a lab on a steady diet of Foreigner hits and original Broadway-cast recordings. I'm not claiming this movie is good for you, Lord knows. It's a little bit like eating a Happy Meal at 4:30 in the morning after a long night of Jagermeister and nitrous oxide. But not to put too fine a point on it, if you ain't lookin' for nothin' but a good time, why should you resist? Some people who claim to understand the public appetite smell an expensive flop here, and that well may be. But I'm here to tell you that this movie is almost too weird to be believed, and that if you share even a fraction of my taste for perversity you should check it out." — Andrew O'Hehir, Salon

UK's Cameron, Obama urge action on eurozone crisis

LONDON (AP) ? British Prime Minister David Cameron and US President Barack Obama have agreed on the need for immediate action to resolve the eurozone crisis.

Downing Street said the two leaders spoke on the phone late Tuesday ahead of the G20 summit in Mexico later this month, when world leaders will discuss Europe's financial woes.

A spokesman for Cameron said he and Obama agreed on the need for an immediate plan to tackle the crisis, as well as a longer-term strategy to secure a strong single currency.

"Speed is of the essence," Cameron told reporters in Oslo before meeting Norwegian Premier Jens Stoltenberg late Wednesday. "Clearly the euro zone crisis is the biggest threat to the world economy today," he added.

Cameron is visiting Berlin Thursday for a student conference with Chancellor Angela Merkel and Stoltenberg, where the eurozone crisis is likely to be discussed. He will then hold a bilateral meeting with Merkel.

Cameron is pressing for eurozone countries to protect their currency with measures including greater fiscal burden-sharing among member countries.

Jenelle Evans, Gary Head Call Off Engagement

Jenelle Evans' engagement to Gary Head did not last long.

Not that we really expected it to, but it was just two weeks ago that the Teen Mom 2 star was seventh heaven after accepting a marriage proposal from Head.

Now the MTV train wreck has called off the engagement and is involved in a bitter dispute with her (former) man over a Tiffany necklace. And Tweeting:

"Thanks to @gary_head  for stealing my $300 Tiffany necklace... What marine does that?!" She implied that the military man took it back to his base.

Jenelle Evans' RingJenelle Evans' Engagement Ring

Also: "Thanks @gary_head  for breaking my door, when r u going to fix it ?!"

Seriously Gary Head. Breaking doors? Not cool.

When one of her followers asked if Gary could take back the engagement ring, Jenelle Evans responded that it's her property "unless he takes me to civil court."

Girl is well-versed in small-time legal disputes, for sure. For his part, Gary tweeted that yesterday was probably his "worst day ever" after the altercation.

"Her necklace is at her house hidden until I get my ring back," he said.

As of yesterday afternoon, Jenelle still had her engagement ring, so perhaps there's hope for the couple ... to get back together and then split again.

Just be glad she's not pregnant again. Probably.

New farm bill would end direct payments to farmers

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A program that puts billions of dollars in the pockets of farmers whether or not they plant a crop may disappear with hardly a protest from farm groups and the politicians who look out for their interests.

The Senate is expected to begin debate this week on a five-year farm and food aid bill that would save $9.3 billion by ending direct payments to farmers and replacing them with subsidized insurance programs for when the weather turns bad or prices go south.

The details are still to be worked out. But there's rare agreement that fixed annual subsidies of $5 billion a year for farmers are no longer feasible in this age of tight budgets and when farmers in general are enjoying record prosperity.

About 80 percent of the bill's half-trillion-dollar cost over the next five years represents nutrition programs, primarily food stamps now going to some 46 million people. About $100 billion would be devoted to crop subsidies and other farm programs.

The Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee last month approved a bill that would save $23 billion over the next decade by ending direct payments and consolidating other programs. The bill would strengthen the subsidized crop insurance program and create a program to compensate farmers for smaller, or "shallow," revenue losses, based on a five-year average, for acres actually planted.

Getting a bill to the president's desk will be a challenge. Most of the bill's spending is on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamps, at an annual cost now of about $75 billion. The Republican-led House is looking for greater cuts to this program than the Democratic Senate will accept.

The House also is more sympathetic to Southern rice and peanut farmers who say that shallow loss program hurts them. They want to keep some form of target price subsidy.

The current farm bill expires at the end of September.

But the Senate bill, and presumably the yet-to-be-written House counterpart, "makes clear that the era of direct payments is over," said Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, who heads the Senate committee. She said the Senate bill "represents the most significant reform in American agriculture policy in decades."

The White House, which also is pushing for the end of direct payments, says more than 50 percent of the subsidies go to farmers making more than $100,000 in income.

Direct payments are only one of several ways the government ensures that farmers are protected from falling prices or weather disasters. The Congressional Research Service estimates that under current law, the government will spend $5.7 billion a year on commodity programs, including direct payments, along with $1.5 billion a year on disaster aid and $9 billion a year to subsidize crop insurance.

The Agriculture Department says that in 2011 the government paid farmers about $10.6 billion, including about $3.6 billion for conservation programs, some 10 percent of the farm sector's record-high net cash income of $108.7 billion

According to the Environmental Working Group, in the 1995-2010 period, the top 10 percent of payment recipients received an average $30,751 a year while the bottom 80 percent got $587 a year.

Direct payments were initially supposed to be a "market transition" device after the 1996 farm bill eliminated other price supports. But those payments became entrenched when farm prices dropped in the next few years and farmers went through a rough period.

Farmers are now willing to give up direct payments because of their increasing reliance on crop insurance. Insured acres have risen from 45 million in 1981 to 265 million in 2011, to the point where 83 percent of the nation's farmed acreage is covered by government-subsidized insurance programs.

The government chips in for an average 62 percent of the farmer's premiums, which supporters insist is different from a direct subsidy because the premiums go into a risk pool to pay for future losses.

The proposed shallow risk program would cap annual payments at $100,000 for a married couple and restricts it to farmers with adjusted gross incomes of less than $750,000. But there are no such caps on the insurance program, drawing criticism from some small government groups. The Senate bill, said Taxpayers for Common Sense, "does nothing to rein in the exploding costs of taxpayer subsidized crop insurance."

The Congressional Budget Office estimated that the government could save $1 billion a year by reducing the premium subsidy by 10 percentage points. The Government Accountability Office says it could save an additional $1 billion if individual farmer subsidies were capped at $40,000 a year.

The GAO said that in 2011 the average value of premium subsidies was $8,312 per farmer, and that one corporation that insured nursery crops in three counties in one state cost the government $2.2 million in premium subsidies and $816,000 in administrative expenses.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has suggested lowering the premium subsidy rate, reducing insurance company returns on investment and cutting payments to farm insurance agents from $1,000 a policy to $900 to save money.

Farm groups argue that higher premiums would result in farmers insuring fewer acres and exposing taxpayers to more special disaster aid in bad times. The American Farm Bureau Federation opposes any changes in current farm bill payment limitations and means-testing provisions.

"Simply stated, payment limits bite hardest when commodity prices are lowest," the federation's president, Bob Stallman, said at a recent House hearing.

Florida FHA Streamline Refinance ? just got ... - Mortgage Chili Blog

?

Refinancing Tampa, Florida FHA mortgages is going to be much more beneficial to a great number of Tampa homeowners this year.

The Federal Housing Administration is making changes and lowering its upfront and monthly mortgage insurance premium fees, hence making FHA home loans more affordable. This is a great boon for Tampa homeowners who are eligible for the FHA?s New Streamline Refinance Program. Home loan refinances that were endorsed by the FHA before June 2009, can garner the benefits of these as of 11th of June 2012.

Get a Streamline Refinance

In the FHA Streamline Refinance program, minimal documentation is asked for and in most cases, a home appraisal is not required. Such conditions are allowing homeowners to refinance despite being upside down on their mortgage they owe.

According to the data gathered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the financial crisis of 2008 has seen over 700,000 homeowners refinancing their mortgages through the FHA?s streamline program.

In Florida, refinancing could have been a more viable option if not for the increasing mortgage insurance premiums on FHA loans.? The borrower?s funds intended for savings will just be spent on paying expensive fees.

In the Chart above, you will see that qualified homeowners are going to find the FHA PMI reductions for Florida home owners cover both the monthly and upfront premiums in a beneficial way.? The upfront premium went from 1.75 to .01 and the monthly premium ? from 1.25 to .55 for loans endorsed by FHA before June of ?09.

FHA Streamline requirements:

  • Have a Florida FHA-insured mortgage
  • Be current with no late payments in the last 12 months
  • Have an FHA-endorsed mortgage before the cutoff deadline in June 2009
  • Pass the 5% ?Net Tangible Benefit? savings requirement that each Florida homeowner has to meet. If this requirement is met then an appraisal will not be needed? a huge relief for upside down Florida refinances. .

FHA Streamline Refinances are currently the most lenient refinances on the market. In its purest form, it requires no credit score verification or employment verification so as long as you meet other qualifications. Although FHA does not require current employment or minimum credit score verification, lenders do not exactly underwrite to FHA guidelines..? Lenders have their own additional requirements, which in industry parlance refers to as ?overlays?.

Why overlays?? Lenders are penalized for ?bad loans?.? This makes them reluctant to underwrite mortgages according solely to FHA guidelines for upside down Florida loans. Due to the fear of having a string of bad loans that leads to FHA no longer doing business with them, FHA is excluding the streamline refinances when calculating each lenders ?score?.

Bad Tech Etiquette To Avoid at Work | Social Media and Tech Tips ...

Angie Reed is a VoIP expert and Switchvox UC Product Marketing Manager at Digium, the creator and sponsor of Asterisk, the world?s most widely used open source communications software. Follow her @switchvox and read her blog.

Technology has simplified communications for most businesses, but the increased use of conference calls, video conferencing, and instant messaging has created a new list of off-putting behaviors that could land your business in an awkward situation.

Here?s a list of some pet peeves that would definitely make Emily Post cringe, and how to avoid them.

Instant Message

1. Knock before entering. Most people know better than to barge into someone?s office or cubicle. The same applies to using IM. Before launching into a conversation, send a polite ?ping? asking if the person is available for a quick chat. If you are on the receiving end, learn to say no if you can?t be interrupted and offer the person an alternative time to talk.

2. Keep it short. IM works best for quick questions and updates. If the message is complicated, and takes more than a few sentences, pick up the phone or get out of your chair and walk down the hall to discuss.

3. Hang the ?Do Not Disturb? sign. If you are unavailable then simply set your status to invisible, away, or out to lunch.

Video Conferencing

1. Video conferencing is more widely used in recent years in an effort to save on travel costs. It?s best to always assume the microphones and the cameras are on. That means don?t do or say anything you don?t want on camera.

2. Sit still, please. You may know someone who constantly fidgets. You may even have threatened to tie them to a chair during a videoconference. Simply put, excessive movements can be extremely distracting to others on the conference, so avoid rocking, pacing, or making dramatic gestures.

3.
Avoid bright, flashy, patterned clothing. Play it safe, wear neutral tones in solid patterns.

Speakerphone

1. Don?t place someone on speaker without first telling all parties involved in the call, and don?t assume everyone knows who is on the call. An obvious solution is to use a conferencing feature that prompts attendees to announce themselves when they arrive.

2. Mute your phone if you dial in from a public area, or if you need to multi-task while on a call. There is nothing worse than feeling like the person on the other end of the line is not engaged.

3. Refrain from having side conversations while participating on calls. It makes it difficult for those on the call to understand the dialogue if there is more than one conversation taking place in the conference room.

4. Avoid loud snacks, smacking of gum, slamming of office drawers, crying babies, barking dogs or basically any noise that will be magnified and hinder communication with other participants.

5. Don?t shout into the speakerphone. Today?s high-definition phones are particularly sensitive and you may come across louder than you intend. And, if you decide to move the phone around the room, keep in mind that the audience on the other side will hear it.

Smartphone

1. Don?t use your speakerphone. If you assumed that using the speakerphone on a cell phone was something that only happens on reality TV, think again. It seems to be a growing trend among many cell phone users ? and an annoyance for anyone standing close by. While it?s fine that you can work from just about anywhere now, don?t make everyone else part of your work day.

2. Be careful what you saw in public. For starters, you never know who might be listening when you happen to be discussing confidential information about, say, customers. It?s a bad idea all around and most of the time the people near you don?t want to hear it. Believe it or not, some people are at Starbucks for the coffee.

Clinton urges Democrats to vote out Wis. governor

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? Former President Bill Clinton urged Wisconsin Democrats to vote against Gov. Scott Walker in Tuesday's recall election, saying the Republican has governed without compromise or honest negotiation.

Clinton rallied hundreds of voters Friday in Milwaukee, a Democratic stronghold and home of Walker's challenger, Democratic Mayor Tom Barrett. The former president was the latest in a string of high-profile Democrats who have campaigned on Barrett's behalf in recent days.

Clinton told the crowd at a downtown riverfront park that the states recovering from the economic downturn are those in which members of both parties are working together.

"They are involved in creative cooperation, not constant conflict," he said, later adding, "Cooperation works. Constant conflict is a dead-bang loser."

Clinton's comments were a clear dig at Walker after the state divided last year over the governor's push to effectively end collective bargaining for most public workers. Walker and Republican leaders rammed his proposal through the state Legislature despite weeks of protests at the state Capitol and Senate Democrats fleeing to Illinois in an ultimately futile effort to block a vote.

That's no way to govern, Clinton said. Real leaders get stakeholders together, listen to their concerns, treat them with respect and make sure everyone moves forward together, he said.

"You get out of a ditch when people stand on each others' shoulders and somebody gets to the top and then reaches down and pulls everybody else up," Clinton said.

The recall election was spurred by anger over the collective bargaining law. Local election clerks who track absentee voting through a statewide computer system had issued at least 182,000 absentee ballots by midday Friday, foreshadowing what is expected to be heavy turnout next week.

Almost 231,000 absentee ballots were cast during the 2010 gubernatorial race, which saw Walker beat Barrett by about 125,000 votes. However, only a third of Wisconsin clerks use the tracking system, which means the actual number of ballots issued so far in the recall is likely much, much higher. Thursday was the last day for most people to request an absentee ballot by mail, and Friday was the final day for absentee voting at clerk's offices.

Walker campaigned Friday with South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who has called herself a "union buster" and considers her state's low union membership rate an economic development tool.

At a printing plant in Sussex, about 20 miles west of Milwaukee, Haley told workers the Wisconsin race was being watched by governors nationwide and called on them to reward what she described as Walker's courage.

"If you have his back ... you will show governors like me that when we fight for you, you will have our backs," Haley said. "And that helps every governor."

Clinton, the biggest Democratic name to visit Wisconsin in the recall, cautioned that Republicans would interpret a Walker win as authorization to continue what he called a divide-and-conquer strategy, and that they'd feel empowered to break unions and continue attacking the middle class.

"Ordinarily I'm against recall elections," Clinton said, "... but sometimes it is the only way to avoid a disastrous course."

Clinton's visit is a nod to the importance of turnout in Milwaukee, a Democratic stronghold where Barrett must do well in order to win the state.

While President Barack Obama has kept his distance from the union fight as his own re-election nears this fall, other Democratic leaders swooped in this week to support Barrett and take jabs at Walker.

"We don't want to wake up after this election and say, 'If only,'" Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley told volunteers in Madison on Thursday. "Now is the time to turn on the afterburners."

The recall election has been unlike anything seen before in Wisconsin, with at least $62 million spent by the candidates and outside groups so far, based on a tally released Thursday by the government watchdog group the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign.

Walker has been leading in polls released by the Marquette University Law School during the past two weeks. One released Wednesday showed him with a 7-point edge, but that was within the margin of error of 4.1 percentage points either way.

With few undecided voters, most campaign experts say the key to victory for both candidates will be getting supporters to the polls.
