Synthetic molecule first electricity-making catalyst to use iron to split hydrogen gas
Monday, February 18, 2013To make fuel cells more economical, engineers want a fast and efficient iron-based molecule that splits hydrogen gas to make electricity. Online Feb. 17 at Nature Chemistry, researchers report such a catalyst. It is the first iron-based catalyst that converts hydrogen directly to electricity. The result moves chemists and engineers one step closer to widely affordable fuel cells.
"A drawback with today's fuel cells is that the platinum they use is more than a thousand times more expensive than iron," said chemist R. Morris Bullock, who leads the research at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
His team at the Center for Molecular Electrocatalysis has been developing catalysts that use cheaper metals such as nickel and iron. The one they report here can split hydrogen as fast as two molecules per second with an efficiency approaching those of commercial catalysts. The center is one of 46 Energy Frontier Research Centers established by the DOE Office of Science across the nation in 2009 to accelerate basic research in energy.
Fuel cells generate electricity out of a chemical fuel, usually hydrogen. The bond within a hydrogen molecule stores electricity, where two electrons connect two hydrogen atoms like a barbell.
Fuel cells use a platinum catalyst -- essentially a chunk of metal -- to crack a hydrogen molecule open like an egg: The electron whites run out and form a current that is electricity. Because platinum's chemical nature gives it the ability to do this, chemists can't simply replace the expensive metal with the cheaper iron or nickel. However, a molecule that exists in nature called a hydrogenase (high-dra-jin-ace) uses iron to split hydrogen.
Bullock and his PNNL colleagues, chemists Tianbiao "Leo" Liu and Dan DuBois, have taken inspiration for their iron-wielding catalyst from a hydrogenase. First Liu created several potential molecules for the team to test. Then, with the best-working molecule up to that point, they determined and tweaked the shape and the internal electronic forces to make additional improvements.
One of the tricks they needed the catalyst to do was to split hydrogen atoms into all of their parts. If a hydrogen atom is an egg, the positively charged proton that serves as the nucleus of the atom would be the yolk. And the electron, which orbits around the proton in a cloud, would be the white. The catalyst moves both the proton-yolks and electron-whites around in a controlled series of steps, sending the protons in one direction and the electrons to an electrode, where the electricity can be used to power things.
To do this, they need to split hydrogen molecules unevenly in an early step of the process. One hydrogen molecule is made up of two protons and two electrons, but the team needed the catalyst to tug away one proton first and send it away, where it is caught by a kind of molecule called a proton acceptor. In a real fuel cell, the acceptor would be oxygen.
Once the first proton with its electron-wooing force is gone, the electrode easily plucks off the first electron. Then another proton and electron are similarly removed, with both of the electrons being shuttled off to the electrode.
The team determined the shape and size of the catalyst and also tested different proton acceptors. With the iron in the middle, arms hanging like pendants around the edges draw out the protons. The best acceptors stole these drawn-off protons away quickly.
With their design down, the team measured how fast the catalyst split molecular hydrogen. It peaked at about two molecules per second, thousands of times faster than the closest, non-electricity making iron-based competitor. In addition, they determined its overpotential, which is a measure of how efficient the catalyst is. Coming in at 160 to 220 millivolts, the catalyst revealed itself to be similar in efficiency to most commercially available catalysts.
Now the team is figuring out the slow steps so they can make them faster, as well as determining the best conditions under which this catalyst performs.

Philippine, Aussie shares at new peaks; yen firms
TOKYO (Reuters) - Philippine and Australian shares scaled new heights on Tuesday but other Asian shares were mixed, with worries about the risk of an inconclusive outcome in Italy's election and about U.S. budget talks limiting the upside after strong rallies in early February.
European markets looked set to inch higher, with financial spreadbetters predicting London's FTSE 100 <.ftse>, Paris's CAC-40 <.fchi> and Frankfurt's DAX <.gdaxi> would open up 0.1 percent. <.l><.eu/>
U.S. stock futures rose 0.1 percent to suggest Wall Street will reopen with a firmer tone after the President's Day holiday on Monday. <.n/>
"Markets have become top-heavy after rallying through early February on signs of economic recovery in the United States and Europe, and investors now await fresh factors to push prices higher from here," said Tomomichi Akuta, senior economist at Mitsubishi UFJ Research and Consulting in Tokyo.
"The broad sentiment is underpinned by a lack of tail risks, but investors are turning to some potentially worrying elements such as Italian elections and U.S. budget talks," he said.
The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> edged up 0.1 percent. Earlier in the day it had touched a 18-1/2-month high. The index has gained 3.5 percent this year.
Shares in the Philippines <.psi>, where a strong economic growth has led to rising interest in the country as an investment destination, hit a record. The Thai index <.seti> was also up 0.3 percent after recent data showed robust fourth-quarter economic numbers.
Australian shares ended 0.4 percent up at a 4-1/2 year high, continuing a recent rally on better-than-expected corporate earnings.
But Hong Kong shares <.hsi> fell 0.2 percent and Shanghai shares <.ssec> shed 1.1 percent, with real estate and financials leading the declines on concerns that rising property prices would lead to fresh restrictions on the sector.
Tokyo's Nikkei stock average <.n225> ended down 0.3 percent, after surging on Monday to approach its highest level since September 2008 of 11,498.42 tapped on February 6. <.t/>
The concerns about Italy's election this weekend and the talks in Washington over a package of budget cuts set to kick in March 1, also helped limit gains in commodities and also weighed on the euro.
The dollar's strength against a basket of currencies <.dxy> capped gains in gold, with the spot price up 0.2 percent at $1,613.01 an ounce.
London copper steadied at $8,122.50 a metric ton as Monday's three-week low drew bargain hunting given prospects for a slowly improving global economic recovery. Unease over China's limp return to the market from a week-long break held back upside momentum, however.
"I think we've already had the nicest rally that we're going to get this year," Singapore-based Credit Suisse analyst Ivan Szpakowski said. "You can still get some more mild upturns, but frankly as you move to the second half of the year industrial metals are going to trend down.
U.S. crude fell 0.5 percent to $95.43 a barrel while Brent steadied around $117.37.
The euro was steady around $1.3348.
YEN JITTERY
Bank of Japan minutes revealed board members had discussed buying longer-dated government debt at their January meeting, sending the yield on five-year Japanese government bonds to record low.
The yen firmed, however, after Finance Minister Taro Aso told reporters Japan has no plans to buy foreign currency bonds as part of monetary easing and as attention remained focused on who will be the next Bank of Japan governor.
The dollar fell 0.3 percent to 93.61 yen, but remained near its highest since May 2010 of 94.465 hit on February 11. The euro eased 0.4 percent to 125.00 yen, below its peak since April 2010 of 127.71 yen touched on February 6
The yen, which has dropped 20 percent against the dollar since mid-November, fell further at the start of the week after financial leaders from the G20 promised not to devalue their currencies to boost exports and avoided singling out Japan for any direct criticism.
The choice of the next BOJ governor and two deputies has drawn attention as a gauge of how strongly Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is committed to reflating the economy. The G20's message was that as long as Japan pursues aggressive monetary easing to achieve that goal, a weaker yen as a result of such domestic monetary policy will be tolerated, analysts say.
"But that means that some other economy's monetary conditions have been tightened," said Barclays Capital in a note.
"Japan hasn't even changed its policy stance thus far, and the effect of expectations of a looser setting have led to limited moves in domestic interest rates, but the sell-off of the JPY has been marked and has clearly caused unease in other economies," the note said.

Pope, near abdication, says pray "for me and next pope"
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict asked the faithful to pray for him and for the next pope, in his penultimate Sunday address to a crowded St. Peter's Square before becoming the first pontiff in centuries to resign.
The crowd chanted "Long live the pope!," waved banners and broke into sustained applause as he spoke from his window. The 85-year-old Benedict, who will abdicate on February 28, thanked them in several languages.
Speaking in Spanish, he told the crowd which the Vatican said numbered more than 50,000: "I beg you to continue praying for me and for the next pope".
It was not clear why the pope chose Spanish to make the only specific reference to his upcoming resignation in his Sunday address.
A number of cardinals have said they would be open to the possibility of a pope from the developing world, be it Latin America, Africa or Asia, as opposed to another from Europe, where the Church is crisis and polarized.
"I can imagine taking a step towards a black pope, an African pope or a Latin American pope," Cardinal Kurt Koch, a Swiss Vatican official who will enter the conclave to choose the next pope, told Reuters in an interview.
After his address, the pope retired into the Vatican's Apostolic Palace for a scheduled, week-long spiritual retreat and will not make any more public appearances until next Sunday.
Speaking in Italian in part of his address about Lent, the period when Christians reflect on their failings and seek guidance in prayer, the pope spoke of the difficulty of making important decisions.
"In decisive moments of life, or, on closer inspection, at every moment in life, we are at a crossroads: do we want to follow the ?I', or God? The individual interest, or the real good, that which is really good?" he said.
FOR THE GOOD OF THE CHURCH
The pope has said his physical and spiritual forces are no longer strong enough to sustain him in the job of leading the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics at a time of crisis for the Church in a fast-changing world.
Benedict's papacy was rocked by crises over the sex abuse of children by priests in Europe and the United States, most of which preceded his time in office but came to light during it.
His reign also saw Muslim anger after he compared Islam to violence. Jews were upset over his rehabilitation of a Holocaust denier. During a scandal over the Church's business dealings, his butler was convicted of leaking his private papers.
Since his shock announcement last Monday, the pope has said several times that he made the difficult decision to become the first pope in more than six centuries to resign for the good of the Church. Aides said he was at peace with himself.
"In a funny way he is even more peaceful now with this decision, unlike the rest of us, he is not somebody who gets choked up really easily," said Greg Burke, a senior media advisor to the Vatican.
"I think that has a lot to do with his spiritual life and who he is and the fact he is such a prayerful man," Burke told Reuters Television.
People in the crowd said the pope was a shadow of the man he was when elected on April 19, 2005.
"Like always, recently, he seemed tired, moved, perplexed, uncertain and insecure," said Stefan Malabar, an Italian in St. Peter's Square.
"It's something that really has an effect on you because the pope should be a strong and authoritative figure but instead he seems very weak, and that really struck me," he said.
The Vatican has said the conclave to choose his successor could start earlier than originally expected, giving the Roman Catholic Church a new leader by mid-March.
Some 117 cardinals under the age of 80 will be eligible to enter the secretive conclave which, according to Church rules, has to start between 15 and 20 days after the papacy becomes vacant, which it will on February 28.
But since the Church is now dealing with an announced resignation and not a sudden death, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said the Vatican would be "interpreting" the law to see if it could start earlier.
CONSULTATIONS BEGUN
Cardinals around the world have already begun informal consultations by phone and email to construct a profile of the man they think would be best suited to lead the Church in a period of continuing crisis.
The Vatican appears to be aiming to have a new pope elected and then formally installed before Palm Sunday on March 24 so he can preside at Holy Week services leading to Easter.
New details emerged at the weekend about Benedict's health.
Peter Seewald, a German journalist who wrote a book with the pope in 2010 in which Benedict first floated the possibility of resigning, visited him again about 10 weeks ago.
"His hearing had deteriorated. He couldn't see with his left eye. His body had become so thin that the tailors had difficulty in keeping up with newly fitted clothes ... I'd never seen him so exhausted-looking, so worn down," Seewald said.
The pope will say one more Sunday noon prayer on February 24 and hold a final general audience on February 27.
The next day he will take a helicopter to the papal summer retreat at Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome, where he will stay for around two months before moving to a convent inside the Vatican where he will live out his remaining years.

The pontiff thanked the crowd for turning out in such large numbers, calling it a "sign of affection and spiritual closeness", and the onlookers responded by calling out "viva il papa" (long live the pope).
Benedict is only the second pontiff to resign of his own free will in 2,000 years.

As it stands, the presentation of this award will be a key moment, potentially telling us a lot about how the rest of the evening is going to go. If ?Argo? wins, you can probably ease into your seat; if it?s something else, we might still have a race.
The Academy wasn?t given a surfeit of options in this category, especially with such prestige adaptations as ?Anna Karenina? and ?On the Road? proving to be either fast faders or non-starters. The field they ended up with, then, was an obvious one, comprising five of the six adaptations in the Best Picture race. (The sixth, the sung-through ?Les Miserables,? was never going to feature for its writing.) It?s a shame that the widely beloved WGA nominee ?The Perks of Being a Wallflower? couldn?t make the cut, but with one higher-profile, Guild-ineligible indie favorite lying in wait as a replacement, these were always the likeliest five.

It's not the most adventurous group the often-innovative writers' branch has ever fielded in this category -- the films are all American, for starters, and only "Beasts" really comes from the fringes -- but it represents a fair spread of styles and approaches. Two are based on novels, with the other three coming a magazine article, a stage play and a non-fiction bestseller, respectively. It's unusual, too, that two of the nominees incorporate elements of magical realism. While some are mourning the popular "Perks," it's hard to claim anyone was egregiously slighted here: as wild as it would be to have such clever adaptations as "21 Jump Street" or "The Loneliest Planet" here, that'd be asking the Academy to be something they're not. ??
Last year, ?The Artist? broke a six-year streak in which the Best Picture winner also took home a screenplay prize ? and some might argue that, given the film?s almost complete lack of dialogue, it was a special case. The simple fact remains that if ?Argo? takes Best Picture, as almost everyone at this point assumes it will, the odds favor first-time nominee Chris Terrio also taking the gold. It?s a tidy piece of writing, after all, with plenty of zesty dialogue and at least one catchphrase that has, if only temporarily, entered the pop-culture lexicon. That?ll be enough for the ?Argo? contingent, who also haven?t been given a wealth of major categories in which to recognize their favorite film of the year. Terrio didn?t win many precursors early in the season, but his upset victory at the Scripters was telling; I say he takes the WGA award this weekend, and then the Oscar.
It?s a testament to the work of director Benh Zeitlin and co-writer Lucy Alibar that many are surprised to learn that the rovingly cinematic ?Beasts of the Southern Wild? is based on a stage play, Alibar?s own ?Juicy and Delicious.? There?s much to be said for a script that allows ample breathing space for the director?s visual storytelling, but there?s some richly literate, even poetic, writing to be found in this heady blend of bayou magical realism and 21st-century survival story, with its occasional stream-of-consciousness verbiage channelling the likes of Toni Morrison. Still, the buzz around Zeitlin has centered mainly on his flamboyant direction, for which he?s already a long shot; ineligible at the WGA awards this weekend, this energetic underdog is likely still bringing up the rear.
2012 brought us a couple of literary adaptations of novels widely tagged with that pointless adjective ?unfilmable? ? practically everything?s filmable, after all, whether it?s filmed well or not ? but where ?Cloud Atlas? largely struggled to surmount that scepticism, Ang Lee?s tricky balance of alternative realities in ?Life of Pi? was widely given a pass. Personally, I think whatever success the film achieves comes despite, rather than because of, the slightly clunky script by former nominee David Magee (?Finding Neverland?): I know I?m not the only one for whom the flat contemporary framing device, in particular, is a sticking point. While general goodwill for the film, as well as respect for Magee?s ambition in taking on this beast ? so to speak ? pulled him through with the WGA and the Academy, I think many voters will likely view the film primarily as a director?s piece.
Earlier in the season, a lot of pundits thought Tony Kushner had this one licked for ?Lincoln.? After all, a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright taking on a bestselling volume by a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian about America?s favorite president... well, it boasts a certain cache. Many early precursors agreed, as Kushner swept up prizes from the New York Critics? Circle, the National Society of Film Critics, the BFCA Critics? Choice Awards ? but his winning streak has slowed recently, as the Globes, Scripters and BAFTA all went elsewhere. The WGA award this weekend is crucial: Kushner?s script is a feat of great verbal density and academic exactitude ? virtues that have led detractors to label it dry or talky ? and his fellow scribes are likeliest to appreciate it. If he doesn?t win there, the former nominee (for another Spielberg film, ?Munich?) is in trouble.
Indeed, I?m beginning to think the likelier threat to the Best Picture favorite here might be David O. Russell?s adaptation of the Matthew Quick novel ?Silver Linings Playbook.? Russell may be on his second directing nod, but has never before been nominated as a writer. (He was deservedly WGA-nominated in 1999 for ?Three Kings.?) Last Sunday, he pulled off the upset of the night at the BAFTAs in this category, his most significant win since taking the National Board of Review prize at the start of the season ? especially surprising given that the Brits hadn?t nominated the boisterous dramedy for Best Film or Director. The Academy, on the other hand, already made their admiration for the film clear in the nominations phase, while the highly verbal blend of pathos and offbeat humor in Russell?s script can be a winning formula ? Alexander Payne has two of these, after all.

Introduction
There are an enormous number of libraries and toolkits for Silverlight (.NET) that can be used while developing Windows Phone applications. This article lists libraries that have been found useful by members of this community (see discussion boards).
Almost like a never ending list it may, over time, contain projects that are outdated. Although it is a comprehensive list, it may not suffice all development needs. In such a case it is recommended to search internet, particularly the following sites - Nokia Projects, codeplex and GitHub. It would be great if a library worthy of this list could be recommended and added, as and when discovered/developed.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX Titan leaks, could cost a grand
NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 690 currently wears the world's-fastest-graphics crown by cramming two Kepler GPUs onto one board. When it comes to improving on that, some leaked European retailer listings suggest NVIDIA might wait on a completely next-gen architecture, but may instead try to deliver similar performance through a less power-hungry single GPU design. The listings, gathered together by TechPowerUp and VideoCardz, point towards a pricey new flagship, the GeForce GTX Titan, that would be a graphics-focused adaptation of the beefy Tesla K20 computing card. It'd pack 2,688 shader units, a 384-bit memory bus and 6GB of RAM, all on one chip -- for reference, the GTX 690 needs two cores to offer 3,072 shader units and 4GB of RAM. There's no confirmed unveiling date, and then primary leak on a Danish site has actually been pulled, but ASUS and EVGA are rumored to be launching their own GTX Titan variants as soon as next week, possibly in the $1,000 to $1,200 ball park. That's a short wait for what could deliver a serious boost to game performance, not to mention bragging rights.

Mali says to hold presidential election on July 7
BAMAKO (Reuters) - Mali will hold a presidential election on July 7, a key step aimed at stabilising the country following the French-led military intervention that has ousted Islamist rebels from the main northern towns, the government said on Thursday.
Following the recapture late last month by French and Malian troops of the biggest northern towns of Gao and Timbuktu, interim President Dioncounda Traore had announced that his government would hold national elections by July 31.
The holding of credible elections is a key demand of Western governments which have backed France's intervention in its former Sahel colony as a blow against al Qaeda-allied jihadists seeking to carry out attacks in the region and in the West.
"The first round of the presidential election will be on the first Sunday in July," Mali's Territorial Administration Minister Moussa Sinko Coulibaly told a news conference in the capital Bamako.
To win in the first round, a candidate will need to gain more than 50 percent of the votes, otherwise a second round run-off will be required between the leading contenders.
Legislative elections would be held on July 21, along with a second round of the presidential vote if this run-off was required, Coulibaly said.
Traore was appointed interim head of state last year after the military junta which seized power in a March 22 coup in the West African state handed over to a civilian administration.
But the coup leaders have continued to meddle in state affairs, increasing foreign calls for a legitimate civilian government to be installed through free and fair elections.
Around 4,000 French troops, backed by the Malian army and several thousand troops from other African states, have driven the al Qaeda-linked Islamist alliance from Mali's main northern towns into the remote northeast mountains.
But Islamist insurgent suicide bombings and a rebel raid last Sunday in the Saharan town of Gao have raised fears of the French becoming bogged down in an arduous counter-insurgency war in Mali.

Bosnian power struggle goes to court
SARAJEVO (Reuters) - A court in Bosnia was asked to rule on a six-month power struggle in the country's autonomous Muslim-Croat Federation on Friday after Bosnian Muslim lawmakers blocked a motion to sack their ministers in the government.
The impasse has paralyzed government in the Federation, one of two regions in Bosnia along with the Serb Republic, and is symptomatic of the complex and unwieldy system of rule in the Balkan country under the peace accords that ended its 1992-95 war.
Lawmakers from the largest Bosnian Muslim, or Bosniak, party, the SDA, blocked a confidence vote in the government, citing "vital national interest", a mechanism designed to safeguard important ethnic rights.
The move means the Federation's Constitutional Court must rule on the motion, which otherwise won the support of both houses of parliament before the SDA blocked its passage.
The dispute stems from last year, when a new coalition government was formed at the state level and tried to replicate the alliance in the Federation.
That would mean removing the SDA, which the party says would be a threat to Bosniak national interests. The opposition accused the SDA of clinging to power and the lucrative networks of patronage that come with it.
"Instead of tackling key reforms, this government has over the past two years spent money, energy and time on inter-party fighting for resources and finances," Predrag Kojovic, a lawmaker from the multi-ethnic opposition Nasa Stranka (Our Party), said during a fiery debate.
"If you had a nuclear option to keep your positions, you'd use it," he said, referring to the SDA.
The country has lurched from one political crisis to another since the end of the war, stalling reforms and leaving it trailing its fellow former Yugoslav republics in the long road to membership of the European Union.
Divided into 10 cantons, each with its own government, the autonomous Federation is a complex web of ethnic power-sharing.
Eighteen years since the war ended, the United States - the chief architect of the Dayton peace accords - launched a fresh push this year for the Federation to be restructured.
"Our experience here has been that political leaders don't do a very good job when they come together in finding solutions," U.S. Ambassador Patrick Moon told Reuters last week.
"So we are making it easy for them," he said. "We're going to do all that work for them."
It was unclear when the Constitutional Court would rule on the motion.
The court issued a statement on Thursday cautioning that it would only decide on such matters when it has a full panel of judges, after three years of arguing between political leaders over whom to appoint.

EU calls for better conditions for Palestinians jailed in Israel
RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - The European Union on Saturday called on Israel to improve conditions for Palestinians in its jails, and a Palestinian minister said there would be rallies next week to support hunger striking prisoners.
Nearly 5,000 Palestinians are held in Israeli jails, many charged with involvement in attacks on Israelis.
EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton said in a statement that she is "following with concern" the deteriorating health of four Palestinian inmates who are staging long-term hunger strikes in protest of their detention.
"The EU calls on the government of Israel to allow for the immediate restoration of their family visiting rights and calls for the full respect of international human rights obligations towards all Palestinian detainees and prisoners," she said.
A spokeswoman for Israel's Prisons Service said the four prisoners were in "good condition" and receiving medical treatment as needed, but they had lost the right to family visits when they began their protests.
Issa Qaraqea, minister for prisoner affairs in the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority, said public demonstrations to show solidarity with the group would be held all next week.
On Friday, Palestinian protesters clashed with Israeli soldiers at a rally outside an Israeli prison in the West Bank.?
Of the prisoners listed by Ashton, Samer al-Issawi has been on hunger strike the longest, for 208 days, and has been treated a number of times in hospital.
Israel had released Issawi from jail in 2011 along with more than a thousand other prisoners as part of a swap to free a captured soldier. Israel arrested him again in January 2012, saying he had violated conditions for his release by engaging in militant activity.

Microsoft job postings confirm more about Windows and Windows Phone Blue
If there's any doubt that the Windows client team is laser-focused on the coming Blue refresh of Windows 8, a new Microsoft job post makes it even plainer.
A February 15 post for a software development engineer in test on the Microsoft Careers site (to which Charon at Ma-config.com alerted me), mentions "Windows Blue." According to that posting, the Core Experience team in Windows Sustained Engineering (WinSE) is involved in making improvements to the start screen, application lifecycle, windowing and personalization. Windows Blue will "build on and improve" these OS components, the posting says.
Here's an excerpt:
"We?re looking for an excellent, experienced SDET to join the Core Experience team in Windows Sustained Engineering (WinSE). The Core Experience features are the centerpiece of the new Windows UI, representing most of what customers touch and see in the OS, including: the start screen; application lifecycle; windowing; and personalization. Windows Blue promises to build and improve upon these aspects of the OS, enhancing ease of use and the overall user experience on devices and PCs worldwide."
Blue is the codename for the next wave of Windows-related operating system and services updates from Microsoft, according to my contacts. There will be a Blue update to Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, Windows Phone 8 and the Windows Services like Hotmail and SkyDrive -- all of which are slated to wash up in roughly the same timeframe, my sources have said. Last year, one tipster told me Microsoft was aiming to deliver Windows Blue around late summer 2013.
Blue isn't simply a fancy new name for a service pack. With Blue, Microsoft is working to transition to a more rapid update pace.?
On the Windows and Windows Phone fronts, Blue is expected to include new features and even new programming interfaces designed to bring the different flavors of Windows closer together, from an app model/development model perspective. That said, it's not just Windows internals that will be updated with Blue. As the job posting above verifies, user interface and experience updates will be part of Blue, too.
Microsoft officials have declined to comment on Blue. It's unknown what Microsoft officially will name Blue once it's released, but it's likely to be positioned as a refresh to Windows 8, not a whole new version of Windows (like a Windows 9), I continue to hear.
By the way, there are plenty of mentions of "blue" on Microsoft's career site that have nothing to do with the coming Blue wave/refresh." Blue links," "blue screens" and "wavy blue lines" all show up -- and have nothing to do with the upcoming Blue refresh.
Update: @h0x0d (Walking Cat on Twitter) just found a Microsoft job reference to Windows Phone Blue, too. Here's his screen shot of it:
As he notes, there's also a reference to "Excel MX" in that job post. Excel MX is likely a not-yet-delivered, fully touch-optimized and Metro Style/Windows Store version of Excel -- similar to the OneNote MX and Lync MX versions of two of Microsoft's Office apps that are in the Windows Store now.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? It took about 10 minutes to wreck several cars at Daytona International Speedway on Friday.
Matt Kenseth triggered a five-car accident in the opening practice for the Sprint Unlimited, the non-points race that kicks off the season.
Kenseth, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, Mark Martin and Juan Pablo Montoya were involved in the crash.
Busch's No. 78 Chevrolet sustained the most damage, forcing the team to switch to a backup car for Saturday night's exhibition event.
Busch said: "It's tough. A lot of hard work goes into these cars, and six weeks of preparation can be trashed in six laps."
Kenseth took blame for the melee, saying he didn't see Busch gaining ground inside him on the 2 1/2-mile superspeedway.

PTI/ New Delhi: Negotiations for the India-EU Free Trade agreement may conclude by April this year, moving a step closer to sealing of the pact that is expected to boost trade and investment.
Visiting French Minister for External Trade Nicole Bricq and Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma on Thursday discussed issues like level of market access relating to the FTA. Bricq is accompanying French President Francois Hollande, who is in India for a two-day visit.
Fifteen rounds of negotiations have been completed for a broad-based Indian-EU Trade and Investment Agreement, an official statement said.
The chief negotiators are meeting in March and "hoped that this would be the last round of negotiations", it added.
"Both sides expect to be able to close negotiations by summer of April 2013 and hope for a balanced and ambitious agreement," it said adding "Loose ends, if any, will be dealt at the Ministerial level in April."
In the meeting, Sharma emphasised on the need for declaration of Data Adequacy Status from the 27-nation bloc to enable EU commitments in cross-border supply to be commercially meaningful to India.
India and the EU are negotiating the pact since June 2007 and have missed several deadlines to conclude the talks due to various differences.
Earlier in the day, France asked India to further open its market for foreign companies in sectors like services and automobile under the India-EU free trade agreement.
"We are negotiating an FTA but we are still facing problems...From our side we still have few questions on liberalisation of services sector on Indian part...Some difficulties in automobile sector," Bricq said while addressing business chambers.
In a separate meeting with the French industry leaders, Sharma said considerable scope is available for French investments in India especially in high-tech sectors, environmental technologies, energy including renewable, infrastructure and food processing.
