Former Federal Prosecutor Matthew J. Cannon Joins Greenberg Traurig, Expands Litigation Practice

International law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP announced that Matthew J. Cannon has joined the Chicago office as a shareholder in the Litigation Practice. Prior to joining the firm, Cannon worked as a federal prosecutor for the United States Department of Justice in the Central District of Illinois.

During his seven-year tenure with the Department of Justice (DOJ), Cannon served as both the Supervisory Assistant United States Attorney for the Headquarters Office of the district and Lead Prosecutor for the Logistics Civil Augmentation Program (LOGCAP) Working Group. The LOGCAP Working Group handled numerous prosecutions and investigations involving bribes, kickbacks, Major Fraud Act and False Claims Act matters, including qui tams, in relation to the multi-billion dollar LOGCAP III and LOGCAP IV prime contracts awarded to private contractors to provide logistics to the United States Army in support of the military conflicts in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan.

In addition, Cannon was lead trial counsel for numerous federal jury trials, including multi-week long fraud trials. As a federal prosecutor, he also handled a variety of prosecutions and investigations in the areas of procurement fraud, wire and mail fraud, money laundering, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, ITAR, Clean Water Act, public corruption and other white collar matters.

Prior to working as a federal prosecutor, Cannon was a litigation associate and then partner at another large Chicago law firm. While there, he handled a wide-range of civil and criminal matters. His work included assisting with internal corporate investigations, defending SEC investigations and handling litigation matters in the following areas: civil, criminal, commercial business, sports, civil rights, securities fraud, RICO, copyright and health care.

Cannon earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Illinois College of Law and his B.A., summa cum laude, from Aurora University.
