With the 2013 Sundance Film Festival around the corner, this collection of 10 short films from the 2012 edition is a reminder that some of the festival?s most satisfying movies are the shorts.

The highlights include: Cutter Hodierne?s Somali pirates drama "Fishing Without Nets"; Aussie director Nash Edgerton?s biting comedy "Bear" (a sequel to his previous prankster short, "Spider"); Drew Christie?s informative animated man-vs.-whale discussion "Song of the Spindle"; and the deadpan teen comedy "The Arm."

?Sundance Short Film Reel 2012?

Opens Friday, Dec. 28, at the Tower Theatre; not rated, but at least one short is probably R for sexual content, while others have disturbing images and language; some shorts are subtitled; 90 minutes.

There are always a few clunkers in a collection like this, but the batting average is still pretty high.
